In Dancing on the Floor of War, the unassailable hegemon Sparta is challenged by the insurgent Thebes. Thebes is led on and off the battlefield by Epaminondas, philosopher and brilliant strategos, and his brave and impetuous best friend, Pelopidus. They are accompanied by Namik, their battlefield physician; Oak, the Theban giant; Milo, the goat boy adopted by Pelo; and Chios; Spartan fugitive and unlikely friend to Epam.
Central to the story is the elite Theban military group known historically as The Sacred Band, comprised of 150 homosexual couples, whose bravery and loyalty to each other insured Theban victory first at Tegyra, then at the pivotal battle of Leuctra, and finally at Mantinea in 362 BCE. They were undefeated for thirty years, until Phillip of Macedon and his son Alexander annihilated them at Chaeronea in 332 BCE.
Epam works to save and strengthen Thebes and to neutralize the Spartan threat once and for all. At the same time he struggles to preserve his most important bond with Pelo, in the face of danger and change. A story of friendship and adventure, both the political and personal themes accelerate to a surprising denouement.
